Some 35MM photos were taken of the OYC clubhouse. These were taken from the public dock by the boat ramp, from the parking lot, from the OYC dock, and from the water. One or more might be cropped and used on the OYC website. In the last photo we have one of the safety boats headed out to set the race markers for the first race.
0819-01-race-setup
Races nominally start at 1400 (2PM). By 1230 or 1300 many of the boats that are normally kept on trailers are in the water and are being rigged. Sailors help each other and if they are ready early have time to just socialize.
0819-02-pre-race-1
No rigging exercise is complete without a sea trial. Racers sail around to make final adjustments, to practice, or to just enjoy sailing around. Most likely it more of the latter.
Some of these photos are nice because these are among the best closeups of the sailors themselves. Anyone looking to print a photo of a skipper and crew, particularly an enlargement, should take a good look through these.
0819-03-race-1-start
The first race featured a downwind start. The start was very clean. The first two photo was taken about 10-15 seconds prior to the start. The second was taken just after the start. The following few photos were taken from the committee boat before stepping aboard the safety boat and following the fleet downwind.
0819-04-race-1
A few photos were taken from a distance. These show the spacing of the boats on the downwind leg. In the latter photos one boat has broken off to the left of the photo. This is Bill and Nancy Moore who have decided to take the long way around the island where the rest of the fleet is taking the shorter way. Apparently the short way had a stronger opposing current on this rising tide.
The odd looking wooden vessel in one of the photos is the "pirate ship" operated as a childrens attraction by Goose Hummock. It is slow moving and did not interfere with the race.
0819-05-race-1
Much of the fleet was closely spaced during this downwind leg. Maynard set their very colorful red, white, and blue spinaker and pulled ahead. In the second photo three boats are sailing with jibs poled out wing and wing and were within a little over a boat length of each other but well behind Maynard.
0819-06-race-1
Once parallel with the island or past it the challenge was negociating the very shallow water and the opposing tidal current. These photos were taken while sitting near the mark in the safety boat. These are all still downwind sailing but with some broad reaching to cut through the shoals. Apparently a number of the boats lightly grounded here and lost time.
0819-07-race-1
Rounding the mark behind the island in this race was complicated by the extreme shoal water. One boat sustained minor rudder damage and had to drop out of the race. The fleet otherwise remained fairly tightly packed rounding the mark.
The Hansens drifted past the mark and appeared to be struggling near the shore. It was later confirmed that they had sustained minor rudder damage and did not finish. The damage was repaired between races and the Hansens went on to finish first in the second race.
In the third photo the Moores broad reached in front of the fleet having taken the longer route around the island and rounded the mark first. In the fifth photo they have rounded the mark and are beginning the upwind leg. In the next photo Maynard rounds the mark shortly after Moore and begins pursuit. In subsequent photos other sailors approach and then round this downwind mark.
0819-08-race-1
No one attempted to tack though the narrow shallow side of the island. These photos show the fleet close hauled sailing for the corner of the island.
In the second photo the four leading boats are all on the same tack, with the first three fairly closely spaced. The later photos show the remainder of the fleet in pursuit. In the last photo a small powerboat cuts in front of the safety boat, not causing any danger, but certainly creating quite a wake for one of the racers.
0819-09-race-1
Photos of the upwind leg are taken first from behind the leaders, then from in front of them. Moore remains in the lead but Crocker passes Maynard on this final upwind leg. Apparently Maynard had suffered a minor grounding near the island.
In the first photo, Moore and Crocker are on opposite tacks with Moore still a boat length or two ahead. The eighth photo shows Maynard, now in third, close hauled and pursuing the two leaders. In a later photo the Moores cross in front of Maynard in the photo but with Maynard a few boat lengths back. At this point a few boat lengths separate the three leaders. In the last few photos the gap has widened.

The race committe, Charlie and Susan Thompson, at this point was on the safety boat. The safety boat needed to get ahead of the fleet and return the race committee to the committee boat befoer the finish. On the way some photos of the local commercial scenery were taken.
The first photo is the Orleans Windmill near the Orleans Inn. The second is the Orleans Inn itself. The third is Goose Hummuck, a well known local kayak outfitter.
0819-11-race-1
From the committee boat the two race leaders, Moore and Crocker, are seen tacking toward the finish. About 3-4 boat lengths separate the two at this point.
These photos are taken from quite a distance with a digital camera. In the first photo the three leaders are seen (along with a few randomly placed kayaks). The first two boats are still quite close.
0819-12-race-1-finish
The first three racers cross the finish. The first three photos are the first place finishers, Bill and Nancy Moore. The next three photos are the second place finisher, Roy Crocker. The last photo is the third place finisher, David Maynard.
0819-13-race-1-finish
The remaining finishers, Rick Wilson and Paul McGovern, approach and cross the line. The last photo is the only one where the finish mark actually appears in the photo.
0819-14-after-race-1
The last few shots on a roll of 35MM film are used in between races. A few close ups are taken.
0819-15-after-race-1
A few digital photos are taken in between races.
0819-16-race-2-start
The second race start was upwind. It was another very clean start. Just over a boat length separate the first three or four boats for much of the first upwind leg. In the one of last few photos five boats are seen sailing the same tack with not much distance between the leaders. Hanson and Crocker were leading with less than a boat length between the two with Moore close behind. McGovern and Wilson were close enough behind to be on the same tack in the some of the same photos with the leaders.
Unfortunately the shutter speed got bumped from 250 to 125 so about a dozen photos were overexposed. The result is the color is somewhat distorted. The sky was not purple. The first two photos on this page have normal sky. The first photo on the next page has the purple sky and that is where the error was corrected. Its a good idea to check the light meter now and then.
0819-17-race-2
Rounding the upwind mark it was evident how close the fleet was at this point in the race. Moore tacked toward the mark first and broke from the other two. Crocker and Hansen are seen sailing toward the mark looking to be almost dead even.
Crocker rounded the mark first, followed very closely by Hansen. Both are in the same photo bearing away after the mark. Moore tacked prior to the mark having gone outside and in the next photo is seen to be little more than a boat length from the leaders. In the same photo, Wilson is seen approaching the mark.
In the next few photos Maynard, then Wilson, then McGovern round the mark. All six boats are in the last photo with McGovern just rounding the mark.
0819-18-race-2
The next leg is downwind. It is a pair of broad reaches around the outside mark. The four leaders remain very close heading toward the downwind mark.
The first few photos show the four lead boats. Before the outside mark the standing is Crocker, Hansen, Maynard, and Moore. After the outside mark, Moore gains some ground on Maynard. Crocker and Hansen look to be sailing within a boat lengths lead of each other and Maynard and Moore appear to be sailing within a boat length lead of each other and quite close to the two leaders.
0819-19-race-2
At the downwind mark it is again apparent how close the four lead boats are. Hansen and Crocker look to be sailing tied after rounding the mark. All four lead boats are within a boat length distance at the mark, two leaving it and two approaching it. Maynard looks to have about a half boat length lead on Moore going into the mark.
After the mark Hansen pulls slightly ahead of Crocker. In the same photo, Wilson is approaching the mark.
0819-20-race-2
Hansen makes a good strategic move heading out on a port tack and then coming back on a starboard tack. Being on a starboard tack he is able to force Crocker around his stern as the two cross and improve his slight lead.
0819-21-race-2
Hansen now has over a boat length lead on Crocker. Quite a few boat length separate Moore then Wilson, then Maynard and McGovern. Maynard and McGovern are now fairly close to each other.
0819-22-race-2
The four lead boats are now Hansen, Crocker, Moore, and Wilson. Hansen leads by just over a boat length and expands that lead slightly after rounding the downwind mark. Moore is a few boat lengths behind with Wilson having gained some ground on Moore.
0819-23-race-2
The remaining two boats approach and round the downwind mark.
0819-24-race-2-finish
Steve and I in the safety boat stayed until the last boat rounded the downwind mark and then picked up the mark. We missed the lead boats crossing the finish but we got some good photos of the committee boat and Charlie and Susan Thompson, the race committee for these two races.
0819-25-after-race-2
A few 35MM photos were taken of the boats sailing back to the OYC clubhouse. Some of these photos of daysailors sailing in front of the clubhouse might be cropped and used in the OYC web pages.
0819-26-after-race-2
A few digital photos were taken of the last few racers to return to the club.
