Rounding the mark behind the island in this race was complicated by
the extreme shoal water. One boat sustained minor rudder damage and
had to drop out of the race. The fleet otherwise remained fairly
tightly packed rounding the mark.
The Hansens drifted past the mark and appeared to be struggling near
the shore. It was later confirmed that they had sustained minor
rudder damage and did not finish. The damage was repaired between
races and the Hansens went on to finish first in the second race.
In the third photo the Moores broad reached in front of the fleet
having taken the longer route around the island and rounded the mark
first. In the fifth photo they have rounded the mark and are
beginning the upwind leg. In the next photo Maynard rounds the mark
shortly after Moore and begins pursuit. In subsequent photos other
sailors approach and then round this downwind mark.
