0701-retaining-pond
The area dug out for stones behind the retaining wall flooded in a
heavy rain.
0702-dinghy-in-yard
After being in the garage a while the dinghy got moved out into the
yard.
0710-rough-transplant
This was a rough transplant of a andromeda in the front beds to the
side of the garage. The andromeda already there got moved a little as
it was too close to the garage. Both survived so far.
0712-boat-cover-fail-1
This was the first attempt at a boat cover but it fit rather badly at
the bow, and not very well overall. It was returned and a new one made.
0716-boat-cover-fail-2
This was the second boat cover which came closer to fitting but was
still not quite right. This one was also returned but this time I
brough the dinghy in to make sure they measured carefully. They had
made another cover for this boat and that one fit better but not quite
right. They will lightly adjust the newest (third cover) and fix and
resell the second as used.
0716-mystery-oak
This is an oak sappling growing wild in my yard that I have yet to
identify. Looks not quite like a white oak.
0718-tara-car-shopping
Tara's car was declared not worth fixing and unsafe to drive. It had
160,000+ miles and 15 years of age and the rear suspension arm and
other components had rusted to near failure. This is the Prius ESX
model she ended up buying but from a different dealer.
0720-deck
The deck painting is progressing but Ed is working on it part time and
keeps sanding off paint that he thinks was painted over pressure
treated wood that was still too wet.
0720-weeding-again
Having dug out enough inside the new partially built retaining wall
the rock pile was gone so I could weed again before putting down
mulch.
0721-trim-bushes
Also befor putting down mulch this was a good time for a much needed
trim of the bushes in from of the house.
0722-brutal-transplant
This was a somewhat brutal transplant of a plant that Jo-Ann (with
help from a phone app) identified as a tri-color dappled willow. I
didn't really want the plant so the transplant was rougher than usual.
It was put by the garage near the compost pile.
0722-truck-prep
A nice feature of my truck lumber rack is that it is easily removable.
It was removed in preparation for loading mulch on the truck and a
good thing too since the yard's only working loader had a 3 yard
bucket.
0729-thigh-bruise
Loading mulch on the truck with a 3 yard bucket wasn't working well.
The first load went partly on the tool box and partly beyond the back
of the truck. Both had to be shoveled into the truck. The second
load went better due to putting a tarp over the cab and toolbox. Very
little missed the back. Some ended up over the cab but pulling the
tarp back easily got that back over the toolbox. It was some work
pulling the tarp back further to get the half yard or so of mulch off
the toolbox. At home the tarp was too deep so hard to get out from
the pile. For the third load I moved the tarp up a bit.
Loading the third load was going well. I had almost got the pile off
the toolbox. I gave one last hard pull but unfortunately the pile
moved and the tarp let loose. I went flying off the back of the
truck. It was a long way down from the top of the pile and it was a
bit like leaping off. I landed hard on my left side with my thigh
taking the worst of the fall.
Initially I got up and thought nothing of the fall. It seemed a bit
comical. A few hours later swelling became severe and very painful.
I got x-rays and there was nothing broken. The photo is a few days
later of my severly swollen and now bruised upper thigh were I landed
on my wallet and cell phone in the pants side pocket. The swelling
starts just below the hip and my knee is just below the photo. This
is not yet peak bruising.
0730-thigh-bruise
The next day the bruising increased and there was now bruising on the
inside of the thigh and inside of the knee. This is also not yet peak
bruising but I stopped taking photos of this.
0731-tara-plants
Tara took pictures of her Japanese dogwoods and her rhododendrons.
0801-partial-mulch
Having injured my leg the mulch was not yet done. I put down two
loads and the third was on the truck. A fourth would be needed but I
could barely walk so I couldn't complete the job for a long time.
0801-transplant-fail
The tri-color dappled willow transplant didn't get watered and we had
no rain so after a trim and then a brutal transplant it didn't make
it. If the roots survive it may come back next spring but I doubt it.
0805-mulch-done
I asked Ray to finish applying the mulch. Ray and three others
applied the 2.5 yards already on my truck and got another 3 yards on
his trailer. We keep paying for 2 yards and getting a generous 2
yards. The last load only needed two so they spread the excess out,
making it all just a bit deeper. With four people it only took half a
day. I had expected it to take me two to three days. Looks good.
0810-mexican-salad
This is mexican quinoa and black bean salad.
0811-bobs-cat-boat
One of my former neighbors upgraded from a smaller catboat to a newer
one. I know little about it since Tara took the photos and doesn't
know much about boats. Next time I see Bob, if ever, I'll ask.
0811-chris+paul
Tara's best friend Chris and her husband Paul live in Arizona. They
took a short vacation in Arizona and sent some photos.
0811-tara-lilac
These are two of four lilacs planted a long time ago. These two get
less light and maybe also needed some limestone. They are starting to
do better. A few offshoots have grown. The other two are in full sun
and are doing very well.
0815-passing-sails
This is a cell phone photography fail. The water was glistenning in
the sun and a sailboat went by. The camera did not do the scene
justice. A fast shutter speed would be needed plus the focus needed
to be the main subject in the distance. Real cameras are still needed
at times.
0817-hydrangeas
These three hydrangeas had all been transplanted. The lack of rain
this summer had affected them. The limelight has done well. The blue
hydrangeas got watered and recovered. One flowereed for the first
time and the other while not flowering yet is doing well.
0817-peach-boxes
Jo-Ann volunteered to help can peaches at her house. The first step
to making peach boxes to transport the peaches was to cut the frames.
This was all scrap from the deck railings.
0818-peach-boxes
After assembling the peach box frames, the next step was to make
bottoms. I had enough scrap for one bottom but had to byy a sheet of
thin luan plywood for the other two.
0819-peach-boxes
These are the final three peach boxes. I picked the peaches from one
tree and that only needed one box. The peaches on the other tree were
not ready to pick.
0824-bday
Jo-Ann took quite a few photos on my birthday. The photos are the day
before. Sunday Luke as well as Mike and Erin had to leave about 1PM
so celebration was Saturday.
0824-lily
Lily displayed her balance and grace at a pond at Topstone Park on
Saturday morning.
0827-bday-gifts
Since one of my gifts was a GoPro camera I made a short video mostly
about one of the other gifts. This was not a good time to play with
super wide mode. I cut the resolution very low (for GoPro) because
this wasn't a prize video by far.
0901-back-of-house
These photos are of the house in Belfast taken from the point in the
back yard farthest from the house.
0901-bayside-from-home
These photos are of the mooring field in Bayside taken either from the
no-man's land between my house and the neighbors or maybe on my
property.
0901-dinghy-cover
This is the third iteration of dinghy cover and it finally fits. Not
very well but it fits.
0904-chipmunk-hunt
Jo-Ann sent a video of the pups digging for a chipmunk in Shannon's
garden.
0906-salad-sandwich
For some reason I took a photo of a salad sandwich in a wrap. It has
lettuce, tomato, cucumber, orange bell pepper, veganaise and black
pepper. I think there is some avocado and red onion in there.
0913-lily-cam
This under 1 minute video is a 30:1 time lapse of about 26-27 minutes
of Lily hiking. It was a late Saturday morning so not a lot of fresh
sniffs from weekend dogs visiting the trail so Lily didn't stop much.
The camera was clipped to her harness and with a light tension back on
the leash mostly stayed upright and centered.
0914-lily-cam
This three minute video is a 10:1 time lapse of about a 30 minute
hike. At one point Lily found a snif and did a 360 and knocked the
camera off her harness. This was Sunday morning so lots of dogs had
visited on Saturday so Lily did a lot of stop and sniff. Plus acorns
were falling and Lily did a lot of stop and perk up the ears and
listen. She also greeted some people late in the video but with her
fast motion that was somewhat of a blur.
0923-loch-raven-hike
After Erin and Mike got back from vacation, Erin and I went hiking
with Lily at the reservoir at Loch Raven. This trail area abuts
Cromwell Valley Nature Center trails.
0923-tara-photos
Tara took photos of her new foundation plants. Her friend Cindy came
to visit along with Cindy's son Ian who just graduated law school.
0926-boat-spaces
These photos are somewhat important to me for planing wire runs in the
boat. The first is where the old breaker panel went. Wire access is
terrible there. The second, third, and fourth are the inside of the
small locker behind the top of the companionway stairs (right to
left). This leads from about where the old breaker box was to the
other side of the stairs. There is currently a bilge pump switch
there. The fifth is the panel where the high amperage breaker panel
will go. The sixth is looking up and an area below the cockpit seat
where solenoids and shunts can be mounted. The seventh is is looking
back into the pilot berth area. The empty space under the berth was
created by removing the diesel tank. The large rectagular holes were
for engine access. The small square hole serves no purpose. The
sloping ceiling creates a cavity which may come in handy for running
wires. The eight is the front of the forward starboard side cockpit
locker. The ninth is the is the locker behind that looking at the
back of the enclosure around the pilot berth. There is a false
ceiling in that pilot berth enclosure which may prove useful for
running wires. The tenth is the same locker taken from further back.
The eleventh and final photo is looking forward from inside in an
attempt to figure out what is holding some of the wires that run
forward to the old breaker box and over the ice box to where the
alternator used to be. It appears the structure on the left was
glassed in after wires were installed hidine wire ties that are
keeping the wires in place. That structure is the chute from the
cockpit where ice could be dropped into the icebox (quite a distance
so apparently never used as the ice box would be dented).
0926-office-desk
This is the desk and file cabinet that I offerred to Erin for her home
office. Erin declined so Tara gets it.
0928-behind-garage
This is immediately behind the garage. The big pile is the compost
pile that mostly has decayed sod on it. This is the start of getting
the ground pitched so that it drains well.
0929-behind-garage
The pitch right along the garage back wall is now about 1" for every
8'. This is a first pass with the rototiller.
0930-huge-ship
This is a commercial ship with a large backhoe on it. This is very
likely related to the offshort wind turbine project that is in some
state of planning or initial staging.
0930-neat-drawers
These are very neat drawers that very much impressed Erin, plus some
spices in large bags that I relocated to the pantry.
